Straight Talk About Your Co-op
As
you may have heard, the deregulation of the electric utility industry
is coming to Texas. At Houston County Electric Cooperative we wanted
to take this opportunity to explain to you what deregulation means
to you as a member and how we intend to proceed in light of the
changes that are coming to the marketplace. We take the trust you
put in us very seriously and want you to know we will be that we
will be there for you as deregulation moves foward.
At
this time we believe that co-op members stand to benefit more from
deregulation that the average Texas consumer - as long as we maintain
our cooperative structure. This is possible due to the hard work
of rural Texas Cooperatives during the legislative process.
When
the Texas Legislature voted last year to deregulate electricity,
the bill they passed created a special status for rural electric
co-ops like Houston County Electric Cooperative. Since co-ops are
member owned, non-profit organizations that elect their board of
directors, lawmakers gave them the choice of 'opting in' to the
deregulated system, as individuals, or take advantage of the competitive
benefits of deregulation as a cooperative - with all the bargaining
power that entails.
